How to clean a Dyson Airwrap filter, store it and fly with it
In this article
Short answer
To clean a Dyson Airwrap filter, unplug it, let it cool, slide off the outer filter cage and rinse the cage under warm water.
The filter mesh that stays on the handle is cleaned with the brush only, never with water.
Store the styler once it has cooled, without wrapping the cable around it; you can fly with it in hand luggage or checked baggage.

When to clean the filter
Air enters the styler through a filter at the bottom of the handle.
The filter has two parts: a removable cage on the outside and, under it, a mesh that does not come off.
Dust and leftover hairspray and mousse build up on them, so the styler runs hotter and blows less air.
- White light flashing: time to clean the filter.
- Red light on after cleaning: this is a fault, not dirt — contact Dyson support.
On the Airwrap Co-anda2x the lights mean different things; its manual lists them.
So you do not have to wait for the light, Dyson suggests checking the filter once a month.
How to clean the Airwrap filter
You need the brush that came in the box: it slides onto the cable.
- Unplug the styler and let it cool.
- Slide the brush along the cable to the cage and turn it to clear the dust from the outside.
- Pull the cage down onto the cable, open it and slide it off.
- Rinse the cage under warm running water.
- Shake off the water and leave the cage to dry.
- Clean the mesh on the handle with the same brush, turning it and moving it up and down until all the debris is gone.
- Put the dry cage back and twist it until it clicks.

To see it done, watch Dyson's Airwrap filter cleaning video.
Do not wash the mesh or use any cleaning product on it.
Never use the styler without the cage.
If you have lost the brush, a soft dry brush or a lint-free cloth will do; Dyson sells a replacement.
The newer Airwrap Co-anda2x comes without a brush: its cage is soaked in water, rinsed under a warm tap and refitted only when dry.
Models differ in the details, so check the manual for yours.
How to clean the Supersonic and Airstrait filters
On the Supersonic hair dryer, the cage comes off with an anticlockwise twist.
Clean the cage and the mesh with a soft brush or a lint-free cloth, with no water and no hard pressing.
The Airstrait straightener is the opposite: its filter, once off, can be washed.
- Unplug the straightener and let it cool.
- Pull the filter down onto the cable, open it and take it off.
- Soak it in warm soapy water for at least 30 minutes; Dyson recommends a clarifying shampoo or washing-up liquid.
- Rub it gently with your fingertips inside and out, then shake off the water.
- Leave it to dry for 24 hours somewhere airy before you put it back.
Wipe the mesh on the straightener itself with a dry lint-free cloth.

Body and attachments
Wipe the body with a dry soft cloth.
On the body and attachments, Dyson says not to use lubricants, cleaning products or polishes; soapy water for the Airstrait filter is the one exception in its own manual.
Wipe the attachments with a soft damp cloth, and pull hair out of the brushes by hand.
Do not take the styler apart: the filter comes off without tools, and a styler put back together wrongly can cause an electric shock or a fire.
How to store a Dyson Airwrap
Unplug the styler as soon as you finish, especially in the bathroom: water nearby is a hazard even when it is switched off.
Put the styler and attachments away only once they have cooled.
Coil the cable loosely and do not wrap it around the body; that can damage the cable.
Keep the styler and its attachments together in a case or box, somewhere dry, so the attachments do not get lost or scratched.
Can a Dyson Airwrap go in hand luggage
Yes: a corded Dyson can travel in hand luggage or in checked baggage.
It has no battery and no gas, so EU bans do not cover it.
The only limit is your airline's hand-luggage size and weight.
At security you may be asked to take it out of the bag, like a laptop, so pack it on top.
Mousse, hairspray and other hair products in hand luggage follow the liquids rule: containers of up to 100 ml in one clear bag of up to 1 l. More in makeup in hand luggage.
Will a Dyson work abroad
The Airwrap, Supersonic and Airstrait are made for the voltage of the country they are sold in.
The label on the cable near the plug shows your styler's voltage.
- Same voltage: a plug adapter is all you need.
- Different voltage (for example, a 100–127 V styler from the US or Japan): an adapter will not help, the styler will not work, and Dyson does not recommend voltage converters.
- Supersonic Travel adjusts itself to any voltage from 100 to 240 V, so it needs at most a plug adapter.
A case for the styler
Our Dyson case has three pockets for the attachments and room for hair products and a brush.
